Chapter 13 - Present & Accounted For

They managed to reach the stone circle without significant incident, if you didn’t count the small goat that was now following them and telling somewhat off-colour jokes. Yeveka was finally thankful for the sweltering heat, since it hid the fact that she was blushing.

“Did ya hear the one about the holy man, the stick of butter and the scullery maid?” the animal bleated.

Yeveka spun around, quite sick of its attempts at humour and yelled, “No, and I don’t want to!”

The goat was quite taken aback by her response, gave something akin to a shrug and said, “Alright, suit yourself then,” and wandered off back into the desert.

“Aww,” Bellus moaned, “I’d kind of wanted to hear that one.”

The glare he received from Yeveka quickly convinced him that he was better off not hearing it and had, in fact, never wanted to listen to it in the first place, if he knew what was good for him.

The circle itself was a little different from how she remembered it. Some of the stones had cracks in them, and much of the coloured paints and markings had faded away. One had even been broken in half. The rock was black with gold symbols still showing on the bottom half that hurt her eyes if she looked at it for too long.

“Best to keep away from that one,” Bellus chimed in, as if Yeveka had ever had any interest in approaching it.

She couldn’t really put a word to it, but everything about the stone screamed at her core sense of self-preservation to keep away, and she was all too happy to oblige.

Bellus moved over to one of the more complete stones, and she noticed that he was standing outside of the circle, even after she had walked into it. Given the circumstances, she had partly assumed that the last leg would be a solo trip, but it made her nervous. Seeing as how little, if anything, had gone as planned, she didn’t fancy being stuck in a strange world at the wrong time.

“How does it work?” she asked.

“Well, now that you are holding the spear, you can put your hand on this stone, think about where and when it is you want to go and ‘poof’, you’ll be back in the cave.”

“I can choose when I go to?” Something of a plan started to form in her mind, though Bellus already saw where she was going.

“Yes, but please don’t go anywhere other than back to the cave. It would cause all sorts of problems if you tried to rescue your friends.”

“You’re able to pop around as you please.”

“That’s because I’m a fragment of a being that was created out of the very essence of causality and time. I just kind of fit into wherever I happen to be. You, I’m sorry to say, are not, and while things might seem a little out of sync, I assure you this is exactly where you are supposed to be.”

“I’m supposed to
